A Natrona County man is facing recommended charges on at least 35 counts of forgery, after it was alleged that he took advantage of a vulnerable adult.
45-year-old Roy Davis was arrested in the late afternoon hours of Tuesday, January 23rd, following a Sheriff’s Department Investigation.
According to an arrest affidavit, Sheriff’s Office investigators were alerted to suspicious activity on an elderly woman’s checking account. Members of the woman’s family say that as many as 35 checks were written that did not contain the woman’s signature, and were endorsed to Roy Davis or his wife.
Davis had reportedly been living in the woman’s house and had been serving a caregiver capacity until January 23rd.
Investigators say they interviewed the woman, who examined the checks and stated that she did not write them, sign her name to them, or give Davis authorization at any point to write the checks.
The arrest affidavit goes on to say that during an interview with Sheriff’s officials, Davis admitted to endorsing all 35 of the checks to either himself or his wife. Davis claiming that he was using the money from the checks to pay bills, after accruing approximately $9,000 in gambling debt. Davis also admitted to forging signatures on the checks.
Davis is also reported to have said that while some of the money went to paying bills, the remainder would go “into my pocket.”
Investigators say that they were able to identify and corroborate approximately $15,500 that Davis is suspected of taking from the woman without permission.
Davis was booked into jail on 35 recommended forgery charges, as well as a charge of theft and a charge of Abusing a Vulnerable Adult.
