Phase one of the demolition process of the old Plains Furniture building on David St. has started.

Crews were out early Tuesday morning stripping off decorative green rocks from the facade of the building, exposing the brick of the original 1920s-era car dealership for the first time in decades.

The city purchased the Plains building early last year planning to raze it for a parking space for the David Street Station public plaza. However, plans changed after it was discovered that bones of a 20s-era car dealership were hidden under a 1970s remodel.

A section of the original Fire Station No. 1 garage had also been incorporated into the Plains building years ago. That section has been purchased and will be preserved. The fate of the car dealership, originally Nolan Chevrolet, is yet to be determined.

The city organized a tour in August to let the public view pieces of the original building that were exposed during exploratory demolition.
