First responders retrieve a truck from the river, 5/4/25 (Gregory Hirst, Oil City News)

CASPER, Wyo. — A truck crashed and was abandoned in the river off of Southwest Wyoming Boulevard in Mills for several hours on Sunday morning before a passing driver reported it.

Mills Fire Chief Wil Gay told Oil City News on the scene that a caller reported the vehicle in the river around 10:40 a.m. It was unclear when the crash occurred and the extent to which it would have been visible by passing traffic.

Gay, who put yard work on hold to respond to the scene, said the truck had temporary registration out of Colorado, which was discovered when first responders investigated the interior of the truck for anyone injured. No one was found.

Casper police and Casper Fire-EMS initially responded before the crash site location was found within the Mills city limits. A drone and rescue rafts were deployed downriver to search for anyone injured.

Mills Police Department Cpl. McNett said on the scene that the driver had been contacted. On Tuesday afternoon he confirmed that the driver was uninjured, but was cited for leaving the scene of an accident.

McNett said the crash likely occurred in the early morning hours Sunday. Gay said the truck was headed south and likely failed to negotiate the bend in the road.
